For years, the "Cadillac" Medicare Supplement plan has been Plan F. It's the most comprehensive plan, completely filling the Medicare gaps. But beginning in January 2020, Plan F will no longer be available to newly-eligible Medicare enrollees.
Plan G will be the most comprehensive Medigap plan
With the phase out of Plan F, Medigap Plan G becomes the most comprehensive Medicare option. Plan G offers identical benefits to Plan F except it does not cover the Part B deductible. In other words, once you meet the Part B deductible ($185 in 2019), Plan G will cover all of your Medicare-related expenses. No other Medigap plan will offer as strong of coverage.
Plan G will be the most expensive Medigap Plan
Does this mean Plan G is the "best Medicare supplement plan"? It will certainly over the most coverage, but as you might expect, Plan G will also be the most expensive option available to most people.
If you visit the doctor often, Plan G might be worth the expense. For those with a clean health history, there is a potentially more appealing option.
Plan N is a great alternative to Plan G
Plan G is the most popular Medigap plan, but Plan N should not be overlooked. Medigap Plan N offers the same coverage as Plan G except you'll additionally be responsible for these payments:
$20 copay for hospital visits
$50 copay for emergency room visits
If you don't visit the doctor, your Plan N premium savings can more than make up for the small copays.
